Guidance on Rescue Requirement

In response to a member’s enquiry, the Evaluation Committee is providing the following clarifications on the requirements for Level 2 and Level 3 rescues involving the ascent-to-descent transition of a rescue subject.

Does completion of RCR 7.12 Rescue: From Fall Arrest System satisfy the requirement for upper-level candidates to perform an ascent-to-descent transition of a rescue subject (REG 5.1.2.1)?
No. RCR 6.12 Rescue: Adjacent Rope Set, Ascent to Descent Transition requires the rescue subject to begin in ascent mode on an adjacent two-rope system. REG 5.1.2.1 permits upper-level candidates to complete this requirement using the same two-rope system. A rescue subject beginning suspended from energy-absorbing lanyards does not satisfy this requirement.

Does negotiation of a maneuver with a rescue subject following transfer of the rescue subject from a fall arrest system to the rope access system of the rescuer satisfy one of the rescues required by RCR 8.7 Rescue: From Maneuvers?
No. RCR 8.7 Rescue: From Maneuvers requires a rescue of a rescue subject “from two of the following maneuvers.” REG 8.7 provides the constraints on where a rescue subject may be located at the beginning of these rescues. Suspension from energy-absorbing lanyards is not included in this guidance.
